Why does this matter? Well, we all deserve a tasty treat, and since Doritos are one of the classic favorites, we need to look into this!

So, Which Doritos are vegan? Only some. Most Doritos flavors contain milk sadly, and depending on your personal rules of veganism, all Doritos might be off the cards, as there is always a chance of cross-contamination with Doritos.

Doritos are made from ground corn, or sometimes maize, with vegetable oil and salt. So far, it sounds pretty vegan, right? But there is a catch.

There are many flavors of Doritos, and some will contain dairy products. We also have to remember that all Doritos are made in a factory that also handles milk. So, it really depends on your personal rulings here.

Let’s look at the individual popular flavors!

Are Cool Ranch Doritos Vegan?

Cool ranch Doritos are the best vegetarian option for having a tasty snack. However, they are based on ranch dressing, which sadly… contains milk.

It may sound strange, but this really is not all that surprising when we consider what the flavor is based on. So, it is a sad time for all vegans out there, but cool ranch Doritos are off the cards.

Are Red Doritos Vegan?

The red pack of Doritos is the nacho cheese variety. Now, as you can imagine, these also are not vegan, as their flavoring does contain milk products. So, once again they are vegetarian, but not vegan.

So, if you are asking are red Doritos are vegan, then the answer is no. In fact, in the US, there is only one flavor of Doritos which is vegan!

If you are vegan and living in the US, asking if Doritos are vegan will bring you to one flavor. Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos

In other countries, they do have other options, but in the U.S.A. the only flavor you are going to get that is suitable for vegans is Spicy Sweet Chili.

All other 16 flavors contain milk or meat products! Yuk!

Which Doritos Are Vegan?

It might sound strange to ask this question when we know that the only vegan Doritos in the U.S. are Spicy Sweet Chili, however, there is a catch. If you like importing, or are not afraid to import, there are two flavors for vegans in the UK.

So, if you are fed up with eating Spicy Sweet Chili, you could try ‘Chili Heatwave’ or ‘ Lightly Salted’ from the UK. You would need to import, which may cost you a few dollars more than usual. But at least you’d be trying something new.

Why is this important?

Doritos in different countries have different options.

Most Doritos flavors will include whey powder from milk, milk protein, and if it is cheese flavors, it also contains milk products too!

We think that PepsiCo needs to come up with more vegan flavorings already!

Doritos: Are They Baked Or Fried?
Are Doritos Vegan? Which Doritos Are Vegan?

This is a complex area. Doritos have been fried for a very long time. They are typically fried in vegetable oils. So do not worry, they are not fried in animal fat. However, a new line did come out of Baked! Doritos; this gives them the crunch of a traditional tortilla chip. However, even these aren’t vegan, unfortunately!

Either way, no Doritos are fried in animal fats or animal byproducts. The majority of Doritos you see on shelves are fried in vegetable oil. It is just a shame that so many include milk products!

Vegan Doritos Substitute:

Doritos are not certified vegan, as they are made in the same factory as the flavors that contain milk products.

So, for most of us, if we are bored out of our minds of eating this one flavor that’s suitable for vegans (the sweet chili ones), what can we do?

Substitute!

Here are some options for you.

While you may not be able to eat all the Doritos, can dogs eat Doritos? Maybe Fido is able to munch on the bag your family got you without knowing?

No. Dogs cannot eat Doritos either, so Fido and you have something in common. Dogs have a much shorter digestive tract, and it won’t allow them to break down the preservatives, dyes, and artificial flavorings we can.

So, just give that bag you can’t eat to a friend!

Summary.

What is the real story of how many potato chip manufacturers still use milk products in their chips? We don’t know, but what we do know is that while manufacturers of chips like Doritos let us down, there are many who do give us plenty of tasty choices.

That’s not all! Our options are usually much healthier too, and we get more unique flavors as well!

So, when you next go looking for a tasty bag of chips, you can either have Spicy Sweet Chili, or any of the substitutes we listed above.
