Why Don’t Vegans Eat Eggs?
“But I am not killing any animals when I eat eggs” you are not killing them, no, but you are torturing them. The answer is very simple – because of the cruelty in the egg industry. That’s why vegans do not consume eggs.
So what happens in the egg industry then?
Immediately after the chicks are born – they are taken away from their mothers and are never to be reunited with them again.
The female chicks will spend the rest of their lives producing eggs, in a tiny cage, normally filled with other hens. They do not have any personal space, they are all cramped in.
The female chicks have the ends of their beaks cut off with a blade.
The cages are normally layered on top of each other as well, which means when the hens on top poop, the feces drop to the bottom cages.
When a hen dies, they are normally left in the cage for days, whilst the other living hens step on it and drop their feces on the dead hen.
You get the picture – that is why vegans don’t eat eggs.
Can Vegans Eat Eggs From Their Own Chickens In The Backyard?
The answer is still no. Why? Because the eggs are not meant for us humans, it is not in our right to take them and eat them, they are not produced for us.
Chickens produce them as part of their natural reproductive cycle. To take eggs from chickens for profit or sustenance is exploitation, which is not permissible for those following a vegan lifestyle.
Can Vegetarians Eat Eggs?
Yes, eggs are part of the vegetarian diet, but if you are a vegetarian, I highly recommend you consider transitioning to veganism.
As I have explained above, the cruelty in the egg industry is overwhelming. These poor animals go through an enormous amount of pain and suffering to bring eggs to your table.
At the end of the day, it really isn’t worth it. There are so many other delicious vegan egg options out there.
What Are Some Vegan Egg Alternatives?
For breakfast – I highly suggest scrambled tofu. It’s the closest you can get to scrambled eggs, and scrambled tofu is really high on protein.
For vegan egg alternative in baking – I recommend using flax egg or chia seed egg. To make this, use 1 tbsp of flaxseeds (ground linseeds) or 1 tbsp of chia seeds, then mix that with 3 tbsp of cold water. Let it gel for 5 minutes, it will act as glue. 1 tbsp of these seeds + 3 tbsp of water will create an equivalent of 1 egg.
A vegan alternative to egg wash would be -2 tbsp of plant-based milk with a touch of sugar in it mixed. The sugar is what will help make things golden and crispy on top. Another way – is brushing the top with coconut oil.
