Are Lays Chips Vegan: 2023 Guide

Lays chips are the most popular chip brand in America, next to some other big names. They’ve been around for a long time, and you would think that being a big name brand, they would have the funds to spread themselves out to the vegan market.

Is this the case? Not necessarily. In fact, many of the biggest brands of chips in America just are not vegan. It is highly disappointing. I mean, Doritos only have one actual flavor for vegans in the U.S.!

I’m offended, they need to do better. However, perhaps Lays have got one-up on Doritos? Maybe they will offer us more?

I’m not going to say all Lays are vegan, because that would be a lie, but are some Lays chips vegan? Do Lays have more options for us than Doritos?

Let’s find out together, shall we?

So, Are Lays Chips Vegan?

Well, you will be glad to know that Lays original flavor is actually vegan. Yet, as most would suspect, whether or not all Lays are vegan is very dependent on flavor. Some flavors are vegan and others are not.

Their classic potato chips have the ingredients: potatoes, salt, and vegetable oil. Any plain potato chips from any company are vegan, or at least they usually are.

However, as for the rest of their flavors, this depends. However, I am very happy to tell you that Lays have one-upped Doritos already because so many more of their flavors ARE vegan!

Are There Vegan Lays Chips? What Lays Chips Are Vegan?

Lays have not specifically labeled a particular range as being vegan, but quite a few of their potato chips are actually vegan.

Here are some of them:

  • Lay’s Limón Potato chips.
  • Lay’s Chesapeake Bay Char Spice Potato Chips.
  • Lay’s Lightly Salted.
  • Lay’s Poppables Sea Salt Potato Snacks.
  • Lay’s Simply BBQ Thick Cut Potato Chips.
  • Lay’s Dill Pickle Potato Chips.
  • Lay’s Stax Original Potato Crisps.
  • Lay’s Wavy Lightly Salted Potato Chips.

These are just some of the flavors that are vegan, there are more. However, with this list, I can safely tell you, Lay’s are probably one of the best big-name brands of potato chips for vegans, as they actually have plenty of options! Finally!

Are Lay’s Dill Pickle Chips Vegan?

Are Lays Chips Vegan: 2022 Guide

Not a huge amount of potato chips out there are dill pickle-flavored, and of those that are, even fewer are vegan. Maybe it was a happy accident that Lay’s made their dill pickle chips vegan!

All that you will find in their Dill Pickle flavor is:

  • Potatoes
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Spice extracts
  • Vinegar
  • Maltodextrin from corn
  • Yeast extract
  • Natural flavorings

There are no animal ingredients here!

Are Lays Barbecue Chips Vegan?

You wouldn’t think to find a BBQ flavor that is vegan, would you? Lay’s BBQ flavor is actually vegan, though.

What’s in them?

  • Potatoes
  • Dextrose
  • Molasses
  • Yeast
  • Onion Powder
  • Tomato Powder
  • Corn Starch
  • Paprika
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Maltodextrin from corn
  • Spices
  • Torula Yeast
  • Natural Flavors
  • Sugar
  • Mustard Seed Oil

Of all these, only the natural flavors and sugar are questionable. Sugar is dependent on the kind of vegan you are. Some strict vegans wouldn’t touch sugar with a 6ft barge pole, others don’t mind it. Not all sugar is made with bone char, after all, but it is still a controversial area.

Lays Salt and Vinegar chips are also vegan! I was honestly praying they were, I’m a sucker for salt and vinegar, so this has made my week!

All you can expect to find in these chips are:

  • Salt
  • Malic Acid
  • Natural flavorings
  • Potatoes
  • Maltodextrin from corn

The only concern here is the natural flavors, but that is up to you to decide if it is okay or not.

Are Lays Classic Chips Vegan?

Lay’s classics are quite obviously vegan, they also have no sugar or natural flavors in them at all, so even for the most extreme vegan, these are 100% nonsense vegan chips!

They only have 3 ingredients, after all!

  • Potatoes
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil

Are Lays Baked Chips Vegan?

Baked potato chips are always a healthier option, with 65% less fat in them than typical potato chips, they are also vegan. However, they do also include sugar, so it, once again, depends on your personal feelings about sugar as a vegan.

These chips include:

  • Corn starch
  • Corn oil
  • Sea salt
  • Soy lecithin
  • Annatto extracts
  • Dried potatoes
  • Sugar
  • Dextrose

Are Lays Chips Vegetarian?

Overall, I would say that Lay’s are vegetarian, in spite of a few exceptions here and there. For the most part in the U.S.A. Lay’s chips are vegetarian, and with a lot of vegan flavors as well, they do suit a very broad range of customers.
