Cherries are one of many beautiful fruits. They are delicious and so sweet, they are the ideal fruit for anyone with a sweet tooth. But, if you’re like me, you may have eaten a load of cherries, and got ever so slightly carried away only to end up hauling yourself into the nearest restroom in a hurry. 

It leaves us all with too many questions.

Do cherries make us poop? Why do they do this? What makes them this way? Was it something else I ate? Too many questions. So little time. 

Or at least for most people. I had the time, so I looked into it. 

Hint: It’s pretty wild, so stick around to find out if cherries are the tastier alternative to a laxative!

Do Eating Cherries Make You Poop?

Well, yes. However, not all the time. But, yes, cherries actually do have laxative properties. Cherry juice does too! 

It contains sorbitol, fructose, vitamin C, and fiber, all of which make cherries a natural laxative. As adults, we can drink 2 glasses of cherry juice in place of taking foul-tasting laxatives! 

Cherries do have laxative properties, although not everyone is affected. But, cherries actually have laxative properties as a way for trees and shrubs to reproduce

No. If anything cherries will do the opposite. They won’t constipate you, instead, they will relieve it. With so much fiber in them, you’re more likely to be running to the toilet, instead of wishing you could sit on it.

How Many Cherries Will Make You Poop?

There is no designated number. However, if you start off with about 7-8 cherries per day, your gut may feel a bit better. If you feel okay with this, try more. You would need to eat a lot to get diarrhea though. More than you probably could eat (or at least more than I could)!

Cherries contain a rather high amount of fructose and fiber, both of which help get your gut on the go. Anything that is high in fiber can get your gut going through. But, cherries are a tasty way to get constipation gone. 

What Happens When You Eat Too Many Cherries?

If you eat too many cherries you can get gas, diarrhea, and bloating. However, this usually only stands for those who may have a salicylate sensitivity, as cherries are very high in this. 

It would be quite difficult for you to eat enough cherries to actually give you diarrhea. Around 10 cups full might give you diarrhea, so you are probably fine. 

Do Cherries Make You Have Diarrhea?

Cherries are similar to many fruits and vegetables though. If you eat too many of them you may get diarrhea, as well as gas and bloat. However, these symptoms are much more common in people with salicylate sensitivity, or those of us who may have a digestive condition. 

They do contain fiber, which helps us poop, but won’t give us diarrhea unless ingested in excess. However, they also contain sorbitol which can cause GI discomfort.

How Many Cherries Can You Eat In A Day?

There are no real restrictions on cherry eating. (Unless there is ever a cherry shortage, I suppose). However, if you really want to benefit from their nutritional properties, you should probably aim for about a single cup of frozen cherries or fresh cherries. 

However, if you are eating dried cherries, you want to only eat a quarter of a cup instead. 

This equates to around 21 fresh cherries.

How Many Cherries Can You Eat Before You Get Sick?

It totally depends on you if I am honest. Some people may be a bit sensitive, which would make only one or two cherries more than enough for them. 

However, many of us could eat one or two whole cups of cherries before we get an unhappy tummy. 

There is no set amount for how many cherries you can eat and when you will get symptoms from eating too many. Some people may not get a reaction for a couple of hours, some may need to rush to the restroom immediately. 

What Are The Side Effects Of Eating Cherries?

If you over imbibe in cherries you can get a bit of a reaction. These reactions will be in your gut. So, you could expect to experience the following: 

  • Bloating. 
  • Gas.
  • Cramps.
  • Possible Diarrhea.

Cherries can be a bit like tomatoes and beets in that they may color your dung. They can send your poop a shade of red, which can be a bit disconcerting if you forget you ate them and now think you’re bleeding out of your bum! 

You aren’t… It’s the cherries.

Cherries can make you poop. Especially if you are sensitive to salicylates, or fiber. They may even make you poop very fast.

If you have a salicylates sensitivity then any form of cherries in any serving is going to make you a bit gassy and run to the restroom.
