We love seaweed, and it is by far one of the best food types to mix in when you fancy something different. However, the way in which it is made can change its ability to fit into our diets.

As a vegan, you need to know what you can and cannot eat, and with how delicious seaweed is, we cannot afford to let this one go amiss. So, let’s give you the lowdown on this tasty treat!

Is All Seaweed Vegan Friendly?

Is seaweed vegan friendly? Yes, seaweed is indeed vegan. Seaweed is just a category of sea vegetable. 

That is not all, seaweed has absolutely no animal byproducts in it, and it is actually really beneficial for vegans too. Thanks to its iodine and other nutrients it contains, it can actually be extremely beneficial for vegans. 

There are different types of seaweed. Let’s take a look at a few of these!

  • Seaweed has the potential to boost the health of your immune system. 
  • It has also been rumored to reduce the risk of cancer!
  • It helps your gut, thanks to it being high in fiber. 

Is Seaweed Gluten-Free?

For the most part, yes, seaweed is gluten-free. However, you should always check. Nori seaweed is gluten-free, as is dried seaweed, but you should be careful if seaweed is integrated into your meal. 

Some dishes, such as sushi dining, may contain gluten. If you are having some Nori seaweed slices, you are safe, but always be cautious if dining out. Always check packets and ask at a restaurant to be safe. 

Why is this important? 

While some people are simply allergic or intolerant to gluten, the biggest risk is celiac disease. So, make sure that you check your seaweed, or your seaweed-based meal before you dive into the flavors!

What Are The Health Benefits Of Seaweed?

There are many health benefits of seaweed, but for vegans, there are even more

A vegan diet can often lack some nutrients, seaweed helps with this. It provides your body with magnesium, zinc, vitamin B12, biotin, and iron, all of which are vital to maintaining full health.

A single gram of this tasty ocean veg can give you a whole day’s worth of iodine, which is critical for your thyroid function. 

It helps for healthy growth and clear skin, as well as enhancing eyesight and improving your mood. 

With a need for iron in your diet, seaweed can prevent anemia and fatigue too!

Is seaweed Keto-friendly? Hmm, kind of. But, there is a catch. Seaweed is keto-friendly, but it does contain a lot of carbs, so be sure to eat it in moderation.

Worried? Is seaweed low fodmap? It’s okay! Seaweed much like rice is naturally low fodmap, so if you are conscious of fodmap foods, seaweed is okay, and you can feel free to indulge.

You can buy seaweed everywhere these days. Even Walmart sells seaweed now! And it is vegan, as it is dried seaweed. For me personally, I just get mine from Amazon.

You can get it from an oriental catering store too, or your local superstore. Seaweed is becoming widely available everywhere now! Thank goodness!
