Why Cereals Are Unhealthy, well to start with, cereals are a highly-processed food.
Breakfast cereals or granolas can be quick and easy breakfast. It can be very convenient, but it’s loaded with sugar, GMOs, and even trans fats.
The majority of breakfast cereals, granolas, breakfast bars and etc, are so full of sugar and refined carbs, and some even have trans fats. Cereals are highly processed food. And they contain simple carbs and sugar, which spike your insulin levels, then you get a sudden drop and you feel hungry and in a need of a quick boost, so you will likely eat something sweet and unhealthy to get your levels back up.
Normally, the cereals have fortified vitamins in them to make them “look” healthy, but really, you are so much better off getting your vitamins through fresh fruit and vegetables. In general, anything (foodwise) that’s been made in a lab, or has been artificially “injected” into food is not healthy.
Le’ts have a look at a couple of reasons Why Cereals Are Unhealthy:
What Is A Cereal?
Breakfast cereal is made from processed grains and often fortified with vitamins and minerals. It is commonly eaten with milk, yogurt, fruit, or nuts.
Here’s how breakfast cereals are typically made:
The grains are usually processed into fine flour and cooked.
The flour is then mixed with ingredients like sugar, cocoa, and water.
Many breakfast bowls of cereal are produced via extrusion, a high-temperature process that uses a machine to shape the cereal.
Next, the cereal is dried.
Finally, the cereal is shaped into forms, such as balls, stars, loops, or rectangles.
Breakfast cereals may also be puffed, flaked, or shredded — or coated in chocolate or frosting before it is dried. That is why your cereal is so delicious, it’s simply processed food, with loads of sugar. And sugar is delicious and addictive.
1. Cereals Are Full Of Refined Carbs And Sugar
As we mentioned earlier, they are full of fat and sugar. That’s how they sell, they sell because they are delicious and convenient. But on what cost? You are loading up on sugar from the morning, and you are going to get a sudden crash after an hour, starving and feeling low, which will direct you to your second quick fix of sugar.
Added sugar may very well be the single worst ingredient in the modern diet.
It contributes to several chronic diseases, and most people are eating way too much of it. It can cause bad skin, to obesity and heart problems.
Most of this sugar comes from processed foods — and breakfast cereals are among the most popular processed foods that are high in added sugars. In fact, most cereals list sugar as the second or third ingredient.
Excess consumption of sugar may also increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer
2. A Lot Of The Cereals Are Loaded With GMO
Hopefully, by now you are painfully aware of how toxic genetically modified foods are for us. Research shows that GMO’s in our food supply are causing increased allergies, digestive problems, liver problems, issues with fertility (even sterility), and much more. And unfortunately, breakfast cereals are loaded with GMO ingredients. It’s actually a really ugly truth that nearly ALL processed foods contain GMOs.
3. The Added Vitamins And Minerals Are Useless To Our Bodies
In order to disguise all the unhealthy facts about the cereals, they try to promote the fact that it has fortified minerals and vitamins which means it’s good for you, right? But it’s not.
Synthetic (man-made) vitamins and minerals are not really absorbed by the body. Your body simply is not designed to utilize them. Many synthetic vitamins are actually treated as toxins and are eliminated by your body as quickly as possible.
Just eat REAL food. There is no substitute for nature.
So don’t be fooled by the food industry into thinking that this highly-processed, over-packaged food product is the answer to a healthy breakfast. Our bodies need REAL food to start the day.
The Bottom Line
Just choose a whole natural breakfast to start your day. Cereals can be very cheap and convenient, but you really don’t want to be starting your day with a highly processed food and already overdosing on sugar with zero nutrients.
If you do like the convenience of it so much, just swap it for a healthier granola, like perhaps if you could even make your own? Here is one of our recipes to try for a Healthy Granola!
