Have you ever had long nights where you wonder what product is the best for your skin, and what products are vegan? Tried many products and wound up unhappy with the results? We know we have. So, take a dive with us as we look into the widely known CeraVe.
CeraVe in UK
So, what is CeraVe? CeraVe is a product made by dermatologists and consists of ceramides that are naturally found in skin, the purpose being to retain moisture and support the skin barrier. CeraVe UK, the products are sold primarily in Superdrug stores but they are also available to purchase online.
Some of the products in these UK stores are:
. Foaming Cleanser for the face
. Facial Moisturising Lotion
. Cream Pot
. Reparative Hand Cream and many more.
It’s clear that they offer a variety for their consumers, with many purposes for the human skin.
CeraVe in US
In contrast to its UK branch, CeraVe US is sold online in a multitude of United States outlets and including Target, Walmart, and Kroger. With such a difference, it’s clear that the US branch is the biggest focus in production.
For example, on the Walmart website, they sell Serum that targets acne. Whereas on Boots, they sell a Smoothing Cleanser. It’s clear that CeraVe contributes a lot more of their products to their US branch but in order to answer our overall question, we must dig a little deeper.
Is CeraVe Vegan?
Now in order to answer your cruelty-free question, we must first ask, is CeraVe vegan? Although the products are not labeled as vegan and nor is the brand certified vegan, CeraVe does not use animal-derived ingredients in the UK. Though some products are created with ingredients like glycerin and cholesterol which are in animal fats and are not vegetarian friendly. In the information section of their website, CeraVe advertises that they use ceramides in the making of their products, specifically ceramides 1, 3, and 6-II.
Ceramides are actually fats or lipids that are found in skin cells and they actually make up about 30% to 40% percent of the outer skin layer or epidermis. These ceramides are important for retaining the skin’s moisture and preventing germs from entering the body. This alone makes it the perfect ingredient for CeraVe and its purposes.
CeraVe Vegan Products
Is CeraVe vegan? Now, with CeraVe vegan products being largely restricted to the UK, it’s a matter of knowing which products are actually vegan for their consumers which is difficult. However, a spokesperson for CeraVe has said they are “working towards producing a range of products that will be about 90% vegan in the US and Canada approximately by 2021.”
Does CeraVe Test On Animals?
Now to answer this question, we must first ask the following. Is CeraVe animal cruelty-free in the US? Is CeraVe cruelty-free in the UK? While CeraVe doesn’t directly test on animals, they do sell their products to a third party, mainland China. Yet, why is CeraVe not cruelty-free? Well, in mainland China, it is by law that they are required to experiment on animals to test their products. Does this make CeraVe animal cruelty free? Indirectly, they do test CeraVe on animals and as a result, this makes them not cruelty-free.
Does CeraVe still test on animals? L’Oreal, who owns the CeraVe skincare brand, released a contradictory statement that said they “no longer experiment their products on animals and doesn’t allow any deviation of this rule…Health officials can choose to do animal tests themselves for certain cosmetic products.” So oddly put, but they didn’t say yes and they didn’t say no either, did they? And this vagueness is why they are still not known as cruelty-free to this day.
Is There Cruelty Free Alternatives?
With the situation of CeraVe’s manufacturing and testing seeming pretty vague, it is unknown to the population if there is a CeraVe cruelty-free alternative. However, it’s time to take a look at some other products that are cruelty-free alternatives:
. Ceramedx Ultra Moisturising Cream: good for those with sensitive skin and conditions such as eczema.
. Paulas Choice–SKIN PERFECTING best for aging skin and replenishes ceramides while helping to keep the skin supple while addressing fine lines.
. Paula’s Choice – Infusing Electrolyte Moisturiser: provides deeper hydration for the skin.
So, whether CeraVe is cruelty-free or not, it was hard to determine. There are confusing official statements, so it’s a bit of a debate.
Personally, I am not one for debating and trying to guess. If it’s not clear to me, then I am just not going to use their products.
I listed a couple of options above that you could use instead of CeraVe, so you can still have your skincare routine without CeraVe.
